Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD)
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is one of nine types of muscular dystrophy and is a genetic disorder which causes progressive muscle degeneration and weakness. It is caused by a lack of dystrophin, a protein which helps keep muscle cells intact. An absence of dystrophin causes muscles to be fragile and easily damaged.
Symptoms are often first seen in early childhood (between the ages of 3 and 5) and the condition tends to only affect boys (but can affect girls in rare cases).
The main symptom of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is muscle weakness. It first affects the muscles of the hips, pelvic area, thighs and shoulders. The disease then affects the skeletal (voluntary) muscles in the arms, legs and trunk. By early teens, the heart and respiratory muscles are also affected.
Becker Muscular Dystrophy (BMD) is a milder version of DMD and often begins in the teens or early adulthood. The course is often slower and less predictable than that of DMD.
People with weakened muscles caused by Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy may have mobility issues or difficulty standing and walking. Weakened or stiff muscles can also affect people’s dexterity and ability to manage fiddly things such as zips or buttons on clothing.
At Able2 Wear, we have designed a range of clothing that has been specially adapted for wheelchair users. Our collection of wheelchair trousers and wheelchair shorts are very popular and are available in a drop front or elasticated waist design. We also offer a range of wheelchair fleeces and wheelchair waterproofs that have been designed to be easily put on and taken off without the wearer having to leave their wheelchair. They have also been designed to ensure the body is completely covered – for example, no baggy bits of material or gaping holes where the rain can get in! In addition, none of our clothes include zips or buttons, to help people easily manage their clothing.
